Mega Sushi: A real surprise!

I was quite happy when I was invited by my boyfriend’s family to celebrate my boyfriend’s birthday at a popular sushi joint, Mega Sushi, in the historical village of Steveston, Richmond. Steveston has always been one of my favourite spots, especially for its incredibly breathtaking ocean view and the super-dee-duper sunset at Garry Point Park. Not to mention Mega Sushi is basically located next to it! A short walk along the park after lunch would be nice.

Mega Sushi is a cozy restaurant with a trendy vibe. 2013 is the year that Mega Sushi earned the Readers’ Choice Awards, presented by Richmond Newspaper, amongst all other sushi establishments in Richmond, BC. They are here to wow you first with thoughtful, attentive service, and secondly, with decent Japanese food on a budget.

It was my first time visiting this place. Upon arrival, we were greeted politely to our table while another waitress quickly served up 5 ‘marshmallow-like things’ on a tiny plate and watered them with hot water. We were completely stunned at her magical water as the ‘marshmallow-like things’ grew taller and taller. As they expanded, we came into realization that these were wet cleansing towelettes and the purpose of watering them was to warm them up. It was a true "WOW" moment as one would not expect such attentive service from this kind of neighbourhood restaurant. Too bad I was only managed to capture what was left after.

In addition, the complimentary Brown Rice Green Tea was served in an antique-looking cast iron teapot with double-layered glass teacups. The double-layered glass provided extra insulation which protected our hand from the heat of the hot tea. Could they be any more thoughtful? The only complaint would be the deceiving little teapot, which contained a very little amount of tea despite its heavy weight.

We started off our lunch with Edamame. A simple, freshly steamed dish with green beans and proportionately sprinkled salt.

The lovely sunshine broke through the window and onto our second dish, Spicy Tuna Sashimi. It was refreshingly presented with red tuna on the bottom while the tower-like alfalfa sat on top. I loved the clean and lean texture of the tuna itself. It was fresh and flavourful with a discerning taste of black and white sesame. Not to mention that the spicy sauce was simply fabulous!

Next came a roll that won everyone else’s heart except mine-Crazy Boy Roll. It was basically California Roll served tempura-style (battered and deep fried) with 3 house-signature sauces. For me, the sauces were too dominating to the point that I could barely taste the rest of the ingredients. I was disgusted, but everyone else absolutely loved this dish. They even ordered a second plate of it. On a side note, the restaurant is currently donating 10% of the profit from every Crazy Boy Roll to BC Children’s Hospital. It was good to know that we were contributing to a good cause over the Crazy Boy Roll, twice as much!

What a plate! Godzilla Bite was presented to us in such a fancy and exquisite way! The combination of crispy deep fried seaweed, rice, tender tuna, salmon, and torched spicy chop, was a delightful blend of tastes and textures. This is definitely a dish to return for and it was impressive on all counts.

The following Assorted Tempura was good enough. I got my hand on the Prawn Tempura. It was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.

The shrimps in the Ebi Mayo were deep fried and nicely coated in mayo sauce. I was pleased that they were quite crunchy and it certainly did not disappoint. Not the best I’ve ever had, but not bad considering where we were.

I am not usually a big fan of Oyster Motoyaki but this one actually tasted fine. It was baked well, came hot, and the mayonnaise mixture on top did not come as overpowering. The oyster was pretty fresh too.

We ended the meal with this delicacy-Uni Nigiri. Uni is one of the few edible parts of the sea urchin and nigiri is the most common way of eating uni. It was my first time trying Uni Nigiri and to be honest, I hated it. The uni itself is rich, creamy, with a discernible sweetness as well as almost unacceptable touch of “ocean brine” that made me gag. The vinegar rice on the bottom did not help at all. But I was told Uni can be tough to get into. My boyfriend’s brother only started to appreciate it after a couple tries. Everyone else was a first timer and we all finished our meal with a funny sour face. It was an interesting experience though!

Service throughout was excellent. Hot tea was refilled on time and the server checked on us regularly. We were the first to come in and this place was full half an hour later. Lunch or dinner, it is a very popular restaurant, so I would recommend making a reservation if you can. Food was decent and definitely fit the bill! Mega Sushi has another location in Coquitlam, if anyone is interested. Richmond is their second location. Somehow I survived another family dinner, which is easier when the food is good, as it gives us something to focus on instead of each other’s nerves.
